NYE w/ Charley Crockett, Jake Penrod

A line stretched in both directions around Waterloo Records before Charley Crockett’s in-store performance this past April. Don’t call the Texas country buck grassroots anymore, because at least here at home, he’s gone as mainstream as Yeti. Inside the store, warming up before Lone Stars of every stripe packed in, he stood solo onstage with his guitar, his low and soulful croon still spellbinding. “Whaddya got,” I cracked. “More than you can handle,” he snapped back, edge-sharp. $10 Cowboy proved that in 2024, and now Live From the Ryman encores. Willie Nelson used to own this Moody NYE slot, so take the hint: Crockett’s his replacement. – Raoul Hernandez

NYE 1981 music tribute w/ Amplified Heat, PT Banks, Nolan Potter's Nightmare Band, Hollywood Jones, Moving Panoramas, Dikes of Holland, Chief Cleopatra, DJ LA Scum, Youth Racket

Returning after a gap year, Hotel Vegas and Volstead Lounge crank up the old time machine to pay tribute to artists from decades past. The 2019 edition saw a cast of mostly locals fêting icons from 1959 (Buddy Holly included, natch), while the year prior only dialed things back to 2001. This year travels back four decades to 1981, and features alter-ego sets paying tribute to luminaries Daryl Hall & John Oates, the Ramones, the Clash, the Pretenders, Blondie, Duran Duran, and more. Appearances to anticipate include Moving Panoramas members Leslie Sisson and Cara Tillman stepping into the shoes of Joan Jett and Pat Benatar, respectively; DD Dagger injecting their punk energy into the B-52’s; and Amplified Heat tapping into Texas blues fire as ZZ Top. Also joining in will be troubadour PT Banks, with a voice once described in these pages as “a piercing arrow of warmth and melancholy,” as well as soul-rock singer Chief Cleopatra, and members of psych troupe Nolan Potter’s Nightmare Band. Lastly, members of garage punks Dikes of Holland will stop by; one of many bands detailed in 2013 documentary Mondo Fuzz, a film shot locally by Andy Ray Lemon, who will be sitting in as DJ Youth Racket alongside DJ sets from Hollywood Jones and LA Scum.

NYE 2001 w/ members of Löwin, Otis the Destroyer, Residual Kid, Flesh Lights, Sweet Spirit, Moving Panoramas, & more

For better or worse, 2001 was an unforgettable time in American Music. With Napster getting stymied in federal court and CD sales still platinum as Justin Timberlake’s frosted tips, the music industry reveled in carefree opulence. As such, forth wave boy-bands hyperventilated teens, Destiny’s Child dominated the charts with “Bootylicious,” nu-metal jumped the shark with Crazy Town and Stain’d, and Britney Spears wore a Burmese python around her neck at MTV’s Video Music Awards.: On New Year’s Eve, Hotel Vegas beams us back to the fresh new millennium with NYE 2001, featuring Austin musicians portraying the year’s biggest stars. Flesh Lights singer/guitarist Max Vandever leads a Blink 182 set, Tinnarose channels Britney Spears, Nolan Potter’s Nightmare Band tributes Radiohead, newlyweds Sara Houser (Löwin) and Taylor Wilkins (Otis the Destroyer) bash out the White Stripes, and ridiculously capable Magic Rockers of Texas frontman Jim Campo leads a parade of Nync and Backstreet Boys hits. The Strokes, Daft Punk, Outkast, Interpol, Destiny’s Child, Franz Ferdinand, No Doubt, and the Family Values Tour also get reanimated.: “It’s really about having fun,” Hotel Vegas co-owner Jason McNeely says of the venue’s era-specific NYE shows. “Musicians love it because it’s an opportunity for them to play together with people aren’t usually in bands with.”: McNeely, along with partner Brian Tweedy and marketing/promotions guru Alex Geiser, began the tradition in 2011 at Spider House’s 29th Street Ballroom with a 1977 tribute before moving to Hotel Vegas where they’ve time-machined 1984, 1994, 1968, 1979, 1989, and 1976. McNeely says the immensely popular — and often imitated — events evolved organically.: “We’re able to do this because we have a working relationship with the bands year-round,” he says. “Usually, we’ve already made a decision about the next year. So, after the bands play, we tell them what we’re doing next and they immediately tell us who they want to do.”

East Austin’s Sahara Lounge is your best bet to find mind-blowingly talented African musicians combined with all-around good vibes. Afro Jazz churns out hypnotic waves of sound on the kora and the balafon, two traditional West African instruments, while eight-piece System Positif fuses punk, funk, and reggae into their own brand of energetic Afro-rock. Led by multi-instrumentalist Ibrahim Aminou, Zoumountchi keeps their home venue’s dance floor full with their lively rhythm and horn sections. NYE cosmic disco w/ Golden Dawn Arkestra, Superfónicos, Viben & the Submersibles

Grooves, grooves, grooves from a lysergic threesome of Austin bands that amass over 25 members and all put on a festival-ready show – which is another way to say it’d be fun to trip on mushrooms and dance. Apt for the concert’s banner, psychedelic Afrobeat cirque Golden Dawn Arkestra continue to evolve their disco impulses with club-ready recent singles “Phenomenal” and “Success.” Superfónicos shake down a bouncy Afro-Colombian funk sound infused with the distinct melodies of a gaita and vocals en español. All three bands feature saxophones, but Viben & the Submersibles lean into their sleekness with a keyboard-heavy progressive style dubbed “scuba funk.”

Pilgrimage to the “trash disco, glam rock n roll dance party” at Hotel Vegas and the Volstead Danceteria is a sacred rite, showcasing a powerhouse lineup of local punk and psychedelia to cleanse your soul with a baptismal wash of classic covers. Ferocious guitar licks howl to the tunes of the Damned (represented by Austin’s Gus Baldwin & the Sketch), Black Sabbath (je’Texas), and the Sex Pistols (Chepo). Glitzy tributes to Blondie (Moving Panoramas) and Olivia Newton-John (Leslie Sisson & Sabrina Ellis) promise to pour chic vocal melodies as incantations to the year ahead, while Big Star (Rusty Dusty) and Steely Dan (Billy Glitter) shred all negative vibes with a wave of their whammy bars. Locals still talk about Daikaiju’s Terror Fest showcase of 2019: “Daikaiju delivered ATF's most scorching experience,” reported Rachel Rascoe. “Set up on the floor of Empire Garage, the fiery spectacle turned into pyrotechnic mayhem while fans acted as human drum risers.” A trio of locals light the fuse.

NYE w/ Delta Spirit, PR Newman, Glass Grapes [outside]

Delta Spirit called hiatus while riding their biggest success, 2014’s fourth LP Into the Wide. Yet after a decade of helping forge the indie Americana boom, and bristling against its mainstream expectations, the quintet needed a break to refocus creatively.: “Every record we made, the camp surrounding us was like, ‘Here it is, this is going to happen, your life is going to change,” and we’d been doing that since we were 19,” laughs Matthew Logan Vasquez, who relocated to Wimberley with the split. “If we kept going and put out a record in 2017, it would’ve been with a big chip on our shoulder, and we didn’t want to do that. We wanted to make a record that we were truly passionate about, and ultimately, I wanted to take a break from playing the big music industry game.”: New Year’s Eve in Austin marks Delta Spirit’s first official show in four years as they prepare for a spring tour. With members now spread across North America and involved in other projects, the regrouping took almost a year to coordinate.: “All of our attitudes are set to a goal again and that’s been incredibly fun, though logistically crazy,” attests Vasquez. “Everybody’s become a better musician by playing with and producing other folks. And I’ve gotten to do other projects like Glorietta and get involved in the Austin music community.: “Things are little bit easier now that all my chips aren’t solely in Delta Spirit, and I think that’s the case with everyone else,” he continues. “We’re creative beings and can live our lives by feeding that creative thing elsewhere, but now, we can also bring it back to this thing that means so much to us.”

NYE w/ DJ Paul, Geto Gala, Los Kemet, Blakchyl, Yoso, DJ Mahealani

DJ Paul of legendary Memphis rap group Three 6 Mafia fame kicks out the jam and headlines Antone’s monster New Year’s Eve bash. Also on the bill, Jake Lloyd and Deezie Brown’s Geto Gala run continues following the release of the fantastic full-length Major League. Mississippi-raised LOS KEMET makes nuanced hip-hop he calls “Southern Gangsta Musik.” Blakchyl, alongside Vintage Jay, put out one of the year’s best extended plays in Process of Shinnin. YOSO brings a potent blend of Southern rap, Afrobeats, and dub Belizean reggae. DJ Mahealani provides support with a delectable vinyl set. – Kahron Spearman

NYE w/ Nané, BLK Odyssy, Me Nd Adam, TC Superstar, Vincent Antone, Branx [whole venue]

Welcome to the Jungle NYE paints a wonderfully complete picture of prominent Austin music in 2021. Extravagant indie-soul project Nané rode falsetto-fueled fireworks off last year’s self-titled debut, also appearing on locally set series Twentysomethings: Austin. In the most widely acclaimed local record of the year, BLK ODYSSY wove funk and hip-hop for tragically revitalizing debut BLK VINTAGE. Choreography-fueled pop troupe TC Superstar crafted phone addiction anthem “Waste My Time” on As Seen on TV, while sad-boy duo Me Nd Adam played self-deprecating dirtbags in the “I Only Feel Alive When I’m Stoned” video. Vincent Antone and Branx join.

    NYE w/ Spliff Kazoo

I’m surprised Spliff Kazoo even knows it’s NYE, because he’s always on “island time.” His band, the self-proclaimed “#1 Tropical Western Lounge Act in Austin,” performing in the spacious and sittable backyard of Kinda Tropical is an idyllic option for those wanting a chill-yet-entertaining New Year’s experience. A Bermuda Triangle mind-trip of hilarious gags and delightful coconut twang tunes, the tiki crew represents a welcome scene for those who like the concept of Jimmy Buffett, but not the music, or those who want to say aloha to the stroke of midnight while in a slow conga line.

NYE w/ Third Eye Blind, Gina Chavez, Angélica Rahe, DJ Mel

Why not ring in the new year with a free show by one of the most famous party bands of the Nineties? (You knew “Semi-Charmed Life” was about drugs, right?) Whether or not you plan to bump again on Dec. 31, you might as well admit that Third Eye Blind’s 1997 self-titled album is full of bangers. “How’s It Going To Be”? Iconic breakup song. “Jumper”? A masterclass in suicide prevention. “Graduate”? A commencement soundtrack for a generation. Before you move forward, look back with some undeniable power pop. – Carys Anderson

NYE: the Last Dance at the COCO Complex w/ Peligrosa, the Brothers Groove, Cyber Queen, Rue & Soullareal

Fourth Street’s double-decked Coconut Club is the closest Austin gets to an adult playhouse. The winding complex of four vibrant spaces, however, has been sold to incoming developers, who are poaching the lot for a 40-level high-rise. As historic landmark status was ultimately denied for the block’s stretch of LGBTQIA nightlife, Coco’s NYE programming doubles as a hello and a goodbye, bolstered by a bill of DJ mainstays. Y2K’s Cyber Queen showcase helms the electric Neon Grotto, while Afro-beat and funk command the Laser Pit via the Brothers Groove. Downstairs, Cuatro Gato hosts all-star spinners Rue and Soularreal, while long standing collective Peligrosa inject bass into Latin folk on the rooftop. Though the $20 all-access event is branded as Coco’s last dance, the club has yet to announce a closing date. Whether a countdown to eventual demolition or the last minutes of 2022, Coconut Club always promises a celebration of life.
