If and when this site is converted to a fine arts space for the swells, where will we proles go for events like the Austin Record Convention, lowrider shows, debutante balls, and the SAMI Arts & Crafts Show? Sure, this multipurpose facility is dated, but we have a feeling that like an ornery but kindhearted old uncle, once it's gone we'll miss it a lot. (See related story in "Politics.")

Austin Record Convention
Dealers, collectors, and aficionados gather to share vinyl, CDs, cassettes, posters, shirts, and other music memorabilia from hundreds of vendors. Early-bird shoppers get a day of early access Friday as well as early admission on Saturday and Sunday. Sept. 29-Oct. 1. $5; $30 for early shop.
