Atonement
Joe Wright has fashioned an epic piece of moviemaking from Ian McEwan’s novel: Starring Keira Knightley, the film is consumed with the nature of storytelling and the moral responsibility of the storyteller.

Reign Over Me
This Adam Sandler and Don Cheadle film is often disjointed and needlessly sentimental, though the film's whole often compensates for its sketchy parts.

World Trade Center
This is not the 9/11 film we expected from Stone, who tells the fact-based story of two individuals who somehow survived the collapse of the World Trade Center and with a remarkable economy of expressionistic detail and bombast.

Match Point
Unoriginal but pleasantly prosaic, Woody Allen's latest is a diverting story of crime, love, and luck that conducts itself with a refreshing absence of moral judgment and omniscience.

The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou
Bill Murray won't get the elusive Oscar for this one – for all its visual majesty, The Life Aquatic is too slight – but the film is nevertheless a funny, bewildering, and giddy spectacle.

Ratcatcher
Glasgow, mid-Seventies. A garbagemen's strike afflicts the city. While boys muck around in the diseased water, a drowning occurs, and 12-year-old James Gillespie's life changes forever. From the first moments of this bleak Scottish export, the misery of these people is deeply felt. Children come of age long before their time as families are broken by poverty, drink, death, and grime. Yet writer/director Ramsay produces poetry in all this devastation. Ratcatcher is an inner-city tragedy that plays its story simply, sorrowfully, and beautifully.
"...at amidst all the wretched. Ratcatcher is an inner-city tragedy that plays its story simply, sorrowfully, and beautifully...."
