Goldfrapp
Supernature (Mute)
One thing to remember in approaching Supernature: You are Alison Goldfrapp's bitch. And you love it. Her warm voice atop Will Gregory's chilly synth removes the cool detachment inherent to the electronica/dance genre, which is this Bath, England, duo's triumph on their third studio album. Opener "Ooh La La" evokes everything one might associate with such a phrase. Goldfrapp's buttery voice massages the curves, nooks, and crannies of the silken synth lines, so when she declares, "I need la la la la la," you'll drop everything and give it to her. "You Never Know" has all the mystery of Portishead, plus an irresistible heat sorely lacking in British trip-hop. The melody of "Beautiful," the album's closer, sashays across the dance floor, accompanied by a chorus that you can close your eyes to and let move you, going to your head faster than a strong gin and tonic. This album is a deeply feminine work, infusing the form with heart yet without sacrificing the urge to have a good time. Supernature manages to be sexy and classy at the same time, which is no mean feat in this era of skanky pop tarts and greasy mac daddies. (Thursday, March 16, 12:15am @ Austin Music Hall)
