Kids get crafty when fighting for attention. Oklahoma City lifer Wayne Coyne grew up with five siblings, so the showboating singer desperately craves an audience. Thirty years into their career, his band the Flaming Lips are now more like a bombastic traveling circus than a rock band.

At 10pm Sunday on the Reverberation Stage, musicians tuned up, getting their levels right. Suddenly, an otherworldly, oscillating sound rose into the muggy night as jumbo jets flew overhead. Psychedelic guru Tommy Hall’s amplified jug – soundchecked! With that, the 13th Floor Elevators emerged from the mists of myth and legend and became flesh again.

We’ve never really understood “99 Bottles of Beer.” Sure, the taking one down part is nice – we just don’t like that “pass it around” part. Fortunately, there will be enough local beer flowing for American Craft Beer Week that we won’t have to.

By the time they finished demolishing the oxygen around them like an unholy blend of Savages and Unsane, the few had swollen into a slavering pack of wild animals desperate for more.

Could’ve been easy: Eighties Scotland’s two prime rock & roll contributions back-to-back, bound by Primal Scream frontman Bobby Gillespie being the Jesus & Mary Chain’s drummer on their Psychocandy LP. As the JAMC were recreating their debut Saturday night, Gillespie might have snuck in behind the kit to resume his role as their Moe Tucker.

The early bird got the worm last night. San Francisco’s Thee Oh Sees commenced their set 25 minutes early, sans notice. Keyboardist/backup vocalist Brigid Dawson sitting this tour out, Saturday’s overhauled boys’ club lineup boasted dual drummers for the slot’s hour-plus entirety.

While Saturday sun baked Carson Creek Ranch from Friday’s mud pit to stone path, the Levitation Tent held in the moisture, retaining a swampy, sticky miasma. This proved perfectly brooding dusk conditions for Israeli threepiece Vaadat Charigim, which swaps its Jerusalem roots for pure Oxford shoegaze.

Another sign that Levitation is leaving its psychcentric focus behind, Chui Wan killed it. The Beijing quartet comes off as a post-punk band soaked in just enough reverb to pass. Make no mistake, however. They’re far more interested in dialing in than tuning out.
