Shedding retrospective light on "3am Freestyles" recorded at "2400 Oltorf," ATX Records unleashes its first product since its cross-city relocation last spring. Mingling golden moments from out-of-town visitors Sadat X, Myka Nyne, Riddlore, and Shorty Mac of the S.U.C. with local heat delivered by Haps, Zeale 32, J-Fyzical, and Mr. Green, the apex of ATX Records Presents Volume 1 comes in the form of Element's proclamations on "Ready to Go to War." Bavu Blakes maintains the resolute tone by closing DJ Rapid Ric's Whut It Dew 2 (Mixtape Mechanic) with "I Tried Flow" providing "motivation for the child of the night praying for help, in the dark tryna get a ray of light to himself." Mirage, DJ Kunal M, and DJ Tats demonstrate The Other Side of Texas Volume 1.5 (Melodic Science) with an array of original exclusives such as Tee Double's blazing "Natural Flow" brushing shoulders with freestyles voiced over Southern staples including "Still Tippin," "Like a Boss," and "Nolia Cutz." Joined on the mic by Arson Optics, Kaizen, and emerging Young Nick, Mirage toys with Geto Boys tweak as he admits, "At night I can't sleep so I twist and burn, strictly veggies that's green, no fry or sherm." Utilizing his ties to The Swed.u.s.h Connection (Swedish Brandy), DJ Chicken George highlights the most sophisticated and elegant aspects of hip-hop production. Compiling four introspective instrumentals by DJ Take from Los Angeles, Hydroponic Sound System from Dallas, and Malcolm Kipe from Austin, the EP release signifies yet another instance of the marketing prowess of the Chicken George juggernaut. Ambient-electro outfit OHN returns with its sophomore album In the End, All Things Begin, featuring disjointed down-tempo, uplifting jam-tronica, and bubblegum digi-pop. Attempting to "Search the Heart for Something Real," the OHN collective mines a healthy, warm-blooded pulse at work.
