DVDanger: Fragile Minds
There’s a constant discussion (and rightly so) about the lack of roles for aging actresses. Moreover, the only roles open for many actresses aged 50 and over are as arthritic teenagers in cloying dramedies. Yet while there are a greater number of parts for aging actors, they are often required to play beneath their age.

DVDanger: The Club
There’s a famous and brilliantly subversive British-Irish comedy called Father Ted (if you haven’t seen it, go relish in the genius of the late, great Dermot Morgan) about three priests sent to a craggy island (called, of course, Craggy Island) for sins against the church. The Club is its dark kin, but there's little humor here.

I Like to Watch
Maria Bamford’s Netflix comedy Lady Dynamite, which debuted today, starts slow. A premise-setting premiere that tries to explain its structure is well-timed, although that structure is complex enough that you find yourself learning its rhythms as you go, and the two episodes that follow are the weakest of the set.

Claw-in-Claw With The Lobster
Find true love in 45 days, or you’ll be turned into a crustacean. It sounds like the setup for a Disney fairy tale, but in his English-language debut The Lobster, Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos re-envisions this fantastical conceit as a metaphor for the pains and perils of being in or out of a relationship.

Other Worlds Austin Has The Answer
Sometimes The Answer to your problems is right under your nose. After years of struggling to get movies made, writer/director Iqbal Ahmed quit trying to pitch projects and just made his sci-fi thriller in his own. As an indie filmmaker, he said, "It’s not the right move to ask for permission anymore."

The Hook Laughs With, Not at UT
UT has many beloved spokespersons, like the late Bill Livingston, who wished us aging UT alums “goodbye and good luck” on the old TEX registration system, sports announcer Craig Way, and probably some deans. But it’s time to open our hearts to one more: local comedian and new host of The Hook, Andrew Rosas.

On Set With Virgin Cheerleaders in Chains
Mid-afternoon at the first location for Virgin Cheerleaders in Chains, and before the cast and crew can get on-set, they have to step over the pile of mud-encrusted boots at the door. An overnight deluge at the wooden cabin in Round Rock has turned the driveway into a quagmire. But, hey, no one said indie filmmaking is glamorous.
