SXSW Music Review: The Klitz
As the Violators and Skunks helped invent Austin punk in 1978, the Klitz did the same in Memphis. Led by singer/guitarist/keyboardist Lesa Aldridge – cousin to photographer William Eggleston, Alex Chilton’s former girlfriend, and direct inspiration for the bulk of Big Star’s downbeat Third LP – they deconstructed rock & roll roots with a bratty glee.

Inside the Amazing World of Taxidermy With Stuffed
Erin Derham never expected to make a movie about taxidermy. Before she started researching what would become her lyrical, poignant, and beautiful documentary Stuffed, she admits, she was “very ignorant about the subject.”

SXSW Music Review: Omar Apollo
Born Omar Velasco to Mexican parents who clawed their way into the United States, it’s no surprise that the soulfully psychedelic R&B musician now going by Omar Apollo loses all inhibition while performing.

SXSW Music Review: De La Soul/Black Pumas/Leikeli47
“Bulldozer, make room.” Those three words from Leikeli47’s “Tic Boom” served as a mandate. Get out of the way because this self-proclaimed “rockstar mixed with a ghetto chick” is about to blow. Clad in a sweatsuit, fur coat, and face mask, the Brooklyn rapper proved an absolute force of nature on “No Reload” and “Attitude.”

SXSW Music Review: Jazz Re:Freshed Showcase
Another thrilling Jazz Re:Freshed showcase of young Londoners followed in the footsteps of two previous SXSW showcases on Wednesday at the old Emo’s, now the Main. And as happened in 2017, drummer Yussef Dayes was denied Stateside entry. Not anyone’s fault except the current U.S. administration, but still a disappointment.

SXSW Music Review: Moritz Simon Geist/Daniel Brandt
If robots are coming to replace you, Moritz Simon Geist is a creative oracle. Five small bots set up like high-tech dioramas on stage at Seven Grand on Wednesday “played” techno with Geist at the helm tinkering, but maybe tomorrow they’ll play you like a fiddle.

Algorhythmist Byrke Lou sparks live code into audio at interfacing crossroads that remained a visual mystery. Intending to project the real-time scrolls of her woman-machine interactions, the Berlin physicist met her match in technical difficulties. Germany Music Night host Christopher Schrag thus implored the audience to “feel the code.”

SXSW VR Cinema: Mars Home Planet
You want to know what it’s like to experience this new virtual reality creation that started off as a collaboration between Hewlett-Packard and NVIDIA and swaths of artists and scientists and is now a ready-for-primetime presentation that’s 14 minutes long and at least as hi-res as the screen you’re reading this on.
