The Last Romantic
D: Aaron Nee & Adam Nee; with Adam Nee, James Urbaniak, Shalom Harlow, Jane Bradbury, Sarah Grace Wilson, Ben Brock, Albert Macklin
Calvin Wizzig (Adam Nee) is one of the last great poets, but the world doesn't know it yet. Based on a fictional book, The Last Romantic is Wizzig's amazing journey through the streets of New York. Run-ins with an egomaniacal published writer, an actress living her role as a cat (Harlow), and a woman recently left at the altar punctuate this tale of an artist trying to find himself in a city full of "elitist nut jobs." What it really comes down to is a naive man searching for love. The Last Romantic delves into the self-postulating destiny of a writer who knows he deserves more. Gorgeously shot and perfectly written, the Nee brothers' concoction of disappointment and self-realization belongs in the category with those other brothers, Polish, who have perfected the art of eccentric filmmaking. The filtered spectrum of Wizzig's journey pulls from the screen a battle of hope and despair that is at once uplifting and honest.
