When we heard that the folks from Drafthouse Films were heading to the Cannes Film Festival, we guessed it wasn't just to get a tan. Now the distribution arm of the Alamo empire has announced it has acquired German urban drama Tore Tanzt, under the English title Nothing Bad Can Happen.
The film is screening at Cannes as part of the Un Certain Regard section. Here's the festival synopsis:
Young Tore belongs to the Jesus FreakS, a Christian punk movement rebelling against established religion whilst at the same time following Jesus' precepts of love. One day, in what appears to be a miracle, Tore manages to repair a car which has broken down and gets to know the driver, Benno.
Before long, Tore moves into a tent in Benno’s garden and gradually becomes part of his family. But Benno can’t resist playing a cruel game, designed to test Tore’s faith. As the violence become more and more extreme, Tore’s capacity for love is pushed to its limits.
Nothing Bad Can Happen is the feature debut of German director Katrin Gebbe, whose 2008 short Sores & Sirin dealt with the plight of a pair of orphaned Kurdish refugees in Germany.
This adds another significant international acquisition to the Drafthouse slate. Less than two weeks, ago they announced they'd picked up U.S. rights to A Field in England, the latest from cult British director Ben Wheatley. Crime dramas Graceland and Pieta are currently on release, and the stunning documentary The Act of Killing is due out in July.
