For a “record-breaking 11th year in a row,” garrulous comedian Scott Aukerman returned to SXSW, this year to tape two live episodes of his beloved Comedy Bang! Bang! podcast. With his usual whip-smart timing and managerial expertise on full display, Aukerman guided the first taping at Esther’s Follies to frenzied, deserved applause.

Guy Branum’s new TruTV show, Talk Show the Game Show, previewed with a live version in Esther’s Follies Saturday night. In came 266 drenched audience members and 200+ dripping umbrellas, but the wait in the rain was worth it, as the comics provided more fireworks than even the show’s producers anticipated.

Lashonda Lester's incredible year began last May when she was crowned Funniest Person in Austin, the first African-American to win the contest and first female winner in 16 years. Now, at Sunday's SXSW Comedy major showcase, she’s sharing the stage with Janeane Garofalo, Joe DeRosa, and Shane Mauss – and it’s no big thing.

Laugh lovers who have been holding their breaths waiting to hear who'll be at SXSW Comedy this year can exhale. The 2017 lineup is out and includes Wyatt Cenac, Wanda Sykes, Bob Odenkirk, Chris Hardwick, Janeane Garofalo, and Dan Harmon, among others.

The White House yesterday announced the lineup of the upcoming South by South Lawn event, featuring such names as Leonardo DiCaprio, musical group the Lumineers, and the cast of Netflix’s Stranger Things.

South by Southwest is a cultural behemoth that refuses to stop growing, taking over more of Austin, extending its tendrils to new subjects like fashion and education. Soon, the borders of Austin will not be enough to contain it, as the megafestival turns its colonizing eye toward our nation’s capital.

It’s easy to make jokes about SXSW – the lanyards, the tech scene enthusiasts, even the whiteness (as comedian Moshe Kasher puts it, “diverse kinds of white people”).
