Fashion becomes a product of its creators and their experiences the way any art does. The people out there designing what society wears are, in a sense, designing what a society cares about, and therefore must be people with vision – an ability to see the hot, the now, the chic beyond chic.

So many lapel pins out there lately. And some of them adorable enough to unleash a mild squee over, and quite a few of them hawking one fandom or other, and so many based on some TV-related creation, oh boy, advertise your corporately sponsored pop-culture affinity, rep-re-seeeeeeeent! But, hold on a second.

In the spirit of teaching a person to fish instead of simply giving them a meal, Ubuntu Made, an Austin based nonprofit, is making waves by using a combination of entrepreneurship and philanthropy to help those in need through … shoes.

No one’s suggesting that it’s illegal to wear nothing but shoes on your otherwise naked feet. No one’s suggesting, in other words, that a person ever has to wear socks.

“To transcend fashion, we must transcend beauty.” Queer fashion is dawning on a renaissance, but it’s not all “androgynous” joggers and a-line tees. It’s much more complex and at the root of SXSW’s first ever queer style panel, Queer Style: Visual Activism and Fashion’s Frontier.
