Zack Carlson Leaving Drafthouse

It's with a bloody tear that we read the big news from the Alamo Drafthouse: Longtime booker, nay institution, Zack Carlson, is leaving the team to work on his blossoming film and writing career.

The man behind the long-running Terror Tuesday horror series and a Drafthouse original, after eight years Carlson is leaving to concentrate on his writing and film-making career. Along with his writing and creative partner Bryan Connolly, he already has his history of punk cinema Destroy All Movies!!!: The Complete Guide to Punks on Film on shelves. Nearby you'll probably find The American Scream, the documentary he co-produced about Halloween home haunts. He now has four films and two books underway (including, hopefully, the long-awaited vampire killer DESTROY). He wrote today,"I ended up making a career of celebrating other people's creative endeavors. I should maybe take a crack at a few myself."

Much as we're excited by what he's planning on a bigger screen, locally he'll always be the guy that would rave about oddities like Carnival Magic and Miami Connection. This is a man that made Mausoleum a date movie, and that is a legacy that will not go away. Fortunately, neither will he: Well, not completely. The Drafthouse confirms he will still be working with Fantastic Fest and Drafthouse Pictures.

In a press release, Alamo jefe Tim League wrote, "Zack has left an indelible mark on the Alamo Drafthouse with his incredible enthusiasm. Part of me is sad when a friend moves on from the Alamo, but I'm really happy when they do so to truly pursue their passion."
