Irish mythology is littered with conflicts more dramatic than the material for Holy Well, Sacred Flame. Still, writer-director Bonnie Cullum makes a unique rite from sincerity, sensuousness, and outlandish vision.

Moby Dick
In Kirk Smith's stage adaptation of Moby Dick, language comes forth in great waves, in storms of words, soaking our brains with images of the sea, of a white whale, and of a mad captain's pursuit of it, and while the Vortex Repertory Company Summer Youth Theatre production may not always convey every nuance of every line, it does communicate the feel of a life at sea, danger and dread, and the roles played by Destiny and Death.
"...very much a philosopher's version of Moby Dick. Director Bonnie Cullum has drawn her disparate band of players into..."

The Music of Erica Zann
Vortex Repertory Company's The Music of Erica Zann brings H.P. Lovecraft's "The Music of Erich Zann" to the stage as a chamber opera, and the result is a fever dream, a hallucinatory state in which you're overwhelmed by strange visions and a palpable sense of anxiety and apprehension.

The Deluge
In his new musical, playwright-composer Kirk Smith uses the story of Noah and his wife to look at the seeping, leaking, dripping, pouring inevitability of loss and renewed hope, and the Vortex Repertory Company production makes for a dreamy and wet world, sometimes punctuated with lightning and thunder, but mostly pleasantly adrift in an ocean of sweet, melancholic rain.

Uncaged
Wayne Alan Brenner's friend Sylvia has an opinion about the Vortex Repertory Company's workshop performance Uncaged: The public deserves more for its money than an end-of-the-workshop variety show unless what's onstage is well-performed and original, and except for a handful of pieces by a few participants -- most notably the emcee Ratgirl -- she thinks this isn't.

Sex Farce
Watching Rob Nash morph from character to character at cell-phone speed is like watching Alexander Nemov perfect a somersault after a double flip in an Olympic floorshow. In his new solo show, Sex Farce, Nash handily embodies 14 characters and umpteen sound effects aided only by a chair and an offstage voice, but an unwieldy frame loses Nash's latest a couple of points. The play begins and ends in 2066, which does nothing but make Nash's job harder.
