Bond Package for Mold

A list of AISD mold remediation projects funded by money from the bond package.

AISD's $49.3 million health and safety bond package includes $18.6 million earmarked for mold remediation projects at eight district schools. Officials say those schools, all built in the mid-1980s, have suffered from mold infestation because they were built with newer materials -- like gypsum board -- that molds love to eat.

Another 81 schools, as well as several other district facilities like the Rosedale School and AISD's Carruth administration buildings on Sixth, have been earmarked to get repairs for "water intrusion" issues, like leaky roofs and windows. Some facilities are also targeted for upgrades to their HVAC systems, and construction that will bring them into compliance with the U.S. Americans With Disabilities Act.

Schools earmarked for mold remediation:

* Galindo Elementary $6,100,000

Patton Elementary 2,800,000

Boone Elementary 2,760,000

Widen Elementary 2,730,000

* Kocurek Elementary 2,190,000

Palm Elementary 685,000

Pleasant Hill Elementary 685,000

Summitt Elementary 685,000

Total $18,635,000

* Construction already in progress

  • How Much Mold?

    AISD's notion of mold remediation might be too little money, too few schools.
