Halloween chills and national thrills for the Texas Rollergirls

The Texas Rollergirls' home season may be over, but that doesn't mean all is peaceful in the land of flat track. First things first: You may have seen a billboard for the Mansion of Terror haunted house with a young woman being threatened by a ghoul: that's Scream Queen contest winner Big Nasty of the TXRG Rec'n'Rollerderby league. The woman, not the ghoul.

But the big news is obviously that the Women's Flat Track Derby Association will be holding this year's championship, the Decleration of Derby, up in Philadelphia, PA, Nov. 13-15.

Unsurprisingly, Austin's own Texecutioners blasted through the South Central regionals in Atlanta, earning them the coveted number one slot for the region and a bye on the first round. They'll be facing the winner of the Friday bout between Mad Rollin' Dolls (#2 in the North Central region) and the Boston Derby Dames (#3 in the East). The Texies haven't held the title since the original inaugural Dust Devil in 2006, coming third in 2007 and fourth last year. But with a handful of big-name retirees looking to leave it all in the track, and coach Jim "Koolaid" Jones adding some real fire and control to the lineups, this could be the year when they become the sport's first ever two-time champs.
