Fantastic Fest Gets Toxic With The Toxic Avenger

Fall of the House of Usher, The Creator added

The Toxic Avenger directed by Austin's own Macon Blair, will be this year's opening night film at Fantastic Fest.

Who said that you had to get rid of all the toxic people in your life? Not when they're the Toxic Avenger, the sludgy superhero of the cult horror-comedy series, whose next feature gets its world premiere as the opening night film for Fantastic Fest 2023.

As a celebration of the strangest, most inventive, and bizarre cinema the globe has to offer, Fantastic Fest (Sept. 21-28) didn't have to go too far this year to find this incredible reboot of the Troma Studios cult classic, as this reinvention has been directed by Austin's own Macon Blair. This reinvention features Game of Thrones star Peter Dinklage as the mop-wielding hero, alongside costars Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon.

And you can't have an opener without a closer, and that honor goes to Totally Killer. The eighties-set comedy horror from Prime Video and Blumhouse, directed by Fresh Off the Boat creator Nahnatchka Khan, is a radical riff on Back to the Future with Kiernan Shipka as a teenager who time travels back to 1987 to put an end to a serial killer's rampage before they kill her mother.

The Creator (Image Courtesy of 20th Century)

Wood, Blair, and Shipka are all FF veterans (2013's Grand Piano, 2018's Hold the Dark, and 2015's February, better known from its release title of The Blackcoat's Daughter respectively). However, they're far from the only returning alums. Gareth Edwards (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story) got his big break at the FF-programmed SX Fantastic sidebar with Monsters, but now comes to the main festival with his sci fi epic The Creator.

Similarly, Mike Flanagan (Gerald's Game, 2017) is back with his latest series based around creepy houses: first was The Haunting of Hill House, then The Haunting of Bly Manor, and now he heads into the realm of Edgar Allan Poe with his star-studded adaptation of The Fall of the House of Usher.

Joining him is Hugo Sakamoto (Yellow Dragon's Village, '21) with killer comedy Baby Assassins 2; Álex de la Iglesia (Witching & Bitching, 2013) is back with his latest road trip comedy Four's Company; Joe Lynch (Everly, 2014) with his tribute to Stuart Gordon and H.P. Lovecraft, Suitable Flesh; two FF '21 survivors, Gigi Saul Guerrero (Bingo Hell) and and Scott Derrickson (The Black Phone) team up as part of the roster for the latest in the V/H/S/ anthology series, V/H/S/85; and the Adams family (Hellbender, '21) get supernatural again with Where the Devil Roams.

Caligula: The Ultimate Cut

Fantastic Fest also has an almost unique reputation for archive screenings, and the highest profile dip into cinematic history this year may come with the North American premiere of Caligula: The Ultimate Cut. Few movies have been so rebuilt, reconstructed, and bastardized as Tinto Brass' historical epic, but now film historian Thomas Negovan has re-edited it as close as possible to the original script by Gore Vidal.

If that seems a little cerebral for you, then don't worry: there are also revivals and restorations of bug horrors including The Nest, Bugged!, and infamous Hong Kong skincrawler Centipede Horror.

Scala!!!

And suitably for a festival that loves films, there's a whole slew of films about films, film watching, and film appreciation. Jane Giles and Ali Catterall explore the history of one of London's most legendary art cinemas in Scala!!!, while a lost hero of British exploitation cinema gets his day on the big screen in Mancunian Man: The Legendary Life of Cliff Twemlow. As for fans of physical media, a mecca of VHS culture is memorialized and celebrated for its onging impact with Kim's Video.

Fantastic Fest 2023 runs Sept. 21-28 at the Alamo South Lamar. Tickets, badges, and info at fantasticfest.com. Now here's the rest of the feature lineup:
