Hey, We're Part of the Big 4!

Gays rate alongside abortion, guns, and immigration in Obama's acceptance speech. At least we were mentioned.

Obama's acceptance speech.
Obama's acceptance speech.

Abortion. Guns. Immigration.
And teh Gays.

In his acceptance speech at Invesco Field in Denver, Barack Obama stuck a preemptive straight pin in the rhetorical chest puffery surrounding four touchy, sucker-punch issues. At least… I guess…

It's certainly a plus that the Dem-apparent got in a good solid shot: His point, to defuse the logic-evading bullshit often surrounding these straw men and to make the case that it's better to view difficult disagreements as problems to solve, rather than angry debate fodder. But as a lesbian, I must tell you, it feels icky to be lumped in with divisive hot buttons that Obama presented as examples of potential compromise.

"I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination."

Thanks for having our backs. Sort of.

Bottom line, for me, personally? At least he said the words out loud. And a lot of the rest of the speech kicked a lot more ass than I perceived him to on the trail. I'm ready for some more purple drank.

The entire text of his powerful speech can be had here.
