After news leaked last week that the Doritos stage behind Esther’s Follies had been deemed unsafe by the city to stage mega techno diva Lady Gaga, South by Southwest announced this morning that Stubb’s would host the chip brand’s headliner on Thursday, March 13. Time for the peanut gallery to go Gaga.

Lorde’s Swingin Party
She stood tall and lean at the Austin Music Hall, flanked by two anonymous bodies and their smokestack electronics, first date of her tour and first show since netting a Grammy for Song of the Year. The place was stuffed: teens, snobs, a whole grip of stressed-out moms. Obvious first concert for a number of souls. Good. Pop’s majesty was on full display.

Blue Kentucky Girl Loretta Lynn
In his final local appearance, George Jones, 79, subbed for a topmost 2011 Rodeo Austin headliner. Despite him having gone to pasture as a performer, it was quite the substitution. Loretta Lynn, 81, made good Sunday, and though the “Blue Kentucky Girl” continues playing well past retirement age, her voice remains a delight.

The Sharon Jones Show
Sharon Jones isn’t the show. She’s just the brightest star in the Dap-Kings’ universe. The tiny fireball neither opened the group’s ACL Live at the Moody Theater performance last night nor closed it, but the 57-year-old Brooklyn soul queen sang, dance, and stomped for a full 90 minutes like a superhero. With talent like that, you put it on a pedestal.

Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song: Amos Lee
Philadelphia’s Amos Lee headlines the Moody Theater tonight, but he recalls a performance inside Stubb’s when he was just getting started as one of his most memorable local gigs. Like any well-traveled musician, he loves Austin. Still, when it came time to record his latest, Mountains of Sorrow, Rivers of Song, he chose Nashville.
