SXSW Interview: Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs
“One of the mistakes I’ve made was doing reality TV,” confessed Sean Combs to a standing-room-only crowd. “When I was doing Making the Band, nobody understood that I’m an incredible actor. A lot of people think I yell at people and tell them to get cheesecake and that I’m an asshole. Well, I am an asshole sometimes.”

SXSW Interview: St. Vincent
“Laws, like sausages, cease to inspire respect in proportion as we know how they are made.” Let’s go ahead and apply that to music journalism, particularly in reference Ann Powers’ interview with Annie Clark – St. Vincent.

SXSW Interview: Jarvis Cocker
I’m still not quite sure why Jarvis Cocker was speaking to a Convention Center ballroom this afternoon. Obviously the new Pulp documentary has loomed large at SXSW Film, but the professorial Englishman was nevertheless quite comfortable being an icon, happy to espouse random knowledge in his usual profane way.

SXSW Preview: Kadavar
German trio Kadavar rippled the hard rock underground with its eponymous 2012 debut, but it was second LP Abra Kadavar that stormed the international castle of psychedelic power rock. The Berlin-based threesome returns to Austin twice this year, first at South by Southwest, then in May for Austin Psych Fest – with a U.S. tour in between.

SXSW Live Shot: HyunA
This was undoubtedly the smallest stage HyunA has occupied in quite some time. The 21-year old South Korean has amassed over 100 million total YouTube views between her two smashes “Ice Cream” and “Bubble Pop.” That’s the capacity of Red River dance mainstay Elysium 500,000 times over.

SXSW Live Shot: Slaves
“Finally, some real shit,” growled one sneering Englishman in the audience as he stomped across the British Music Embassy. Even tuning up, Kent-based agro-punk duo Slaves were threatening a riot.

SXSW Live Shot: Latasha Lee & the BlackTies
Austin’s Latasha Lee & the BlackTies knotted together just one year ago, but they already carry themselves like old-school vets. In the past 12 months, the local R&B princess has torn up a bevy of stages both big (ACL) and small (Sahara Lounge) and released a solid digital LP of classic soul.

SXSW Live Shot: Agnes Obel
Agnes Obel’s Tuesday night showcase proved that music made by women can be both fiercely feminine and deeply powerful. Every song by the Berlin-based singer sounded like a period piece, evoking the opening credits to Downton Abbey, dangerous men lurking in misty moors, and a heartbroken starlet lost on the labyrinthine streets of Paris.

SXSW Preview: Lee Fields & the Expressions
Interviews operate on a case-by-case basis. Some subjects require dozens of questions to fill out 15 minutes of conversation. Others require only two or three.
