Gay Place

On the seventh day, the sissies shall bounce. And it is good.

THERE'S BOUNCE AND THERE'S SISSY BOUNCE What is this "bounce?" It is a rap/dance genre from New Orleans. Sissy bounce is its deliciously queer step-cuz. It encourages "bouncing." Think: booty. We sure do. And the big exciting news is that not only will this year's hotly anticipated GaybiGayGay (www.myspace.com/gaybigaygay) again feature some serious sissy bounce purveyors, but – hold on to your hot pants – so will South by Southwest. Officially and shit. The New Orleans Bounce Showcase (which integrates and does not shy away from the sissy variety) will be Sat., March 20, at Submerged. I am so excited I can barely keep my pants on. So you may not share my excitement/fascination, perhaps because you are not familiar with the genre or with what it is like to soak in the glorious puddle of people dancing in New Orleans. Trust me, this is a must-see and -do. To give you a bone on which to chew, I've got to quote one fabulous Web-bound essay from 2008 by Amoeba Music's Eric Brightwell on the mystical musical form: "In a genre like Hip-Hop where machismo is slavishly cultivated like a cash crop, it may seem crazy for something like Sissy Rap to develop, especially in the projects of the hardest city in the country. It's not as crazy, I suppose, if you know New Orleans at all: a city where gutta-ness and a defiant attitude trumps Neanderthal posturing at least some of the time." So, the other big news is that our own Christeene and Storm Shelter will be joined at the hips by a few sissy-bouncin' DJs, specifically Vocka Redu and DJ Rusty Lazer, for an amazing fundraiser at the Independent at 501 Studios this Saturday. See you on the ... backside. (See Saturday.)
