Luv Doc Recommends: Linucon

Austin Crowne Plaza, Friday, October 8, 2004

What a busy weekend ahead. There’s the Texas/OU game up in the Big D. If you’re into coming early, being loud, wearing orange, and then driving back to Austin humiliated, you’ll want to ice down the light beer and cut out of work around noon on Friday to get a jump on all of the other drunken idiots on I-35. Then again, you might be more of a homebody – some sort of vampiric neopunk with orange hair, peg-stretched earlobes, and armloads of evil-looking Asian tattoos – the type who doesn’t quite feel at home with the sporting set. Understandable. Not everybody can be a Delta. The ticket for you this weekend might be the Red River Rockout, a two-day musical extravaganza featuring loud, edgy bands like Broken Teeth, Tia Carrera, Speedloader, Honky, Shinola, Kissinger, the Oklahomos, and Gibby Haynes and His Problem, among others – 70 at last count. Also on the bill are educational panels (panels are rarely entertaining, so they must be educational), exotic exhibits (somebody’s prolly getting nekkid), freak shows (natch), and films and parties and whatnot. Count on it being alternative, because chances are everybody else is up in Dallas … except … for the computer geek/sci-fi/animé/techie/Linux/gaming contingent, who will be getting their code on over at the Red Lion at the first-ever Linucon. If you’re cruising for meat, it’s a safe bet you won’t be running into many washboard abs at this deal. In fact, six-packs of either variety would be a bit of a surprise, but, hey, not everybody can be a Delta. Take heart, the place should be lousy with Phi Beta Kappas. If you play your Diablo right, you might end your EverQuest with a Final Fantasy – maybe a nascent Bill Gates or a studlier proto-Dell. Take your time. There are more than 100 hours of infotaining panels where you can bat your lashes and flash your pasty white gams.
