Digestible Feats
The spirits of Christmas present
By Robert Faires, Fri., Dec. 2, 2011
How's about raising a glass to Digestible Feats, that glorious initiative of the Fusebox Festival that is about, at least in part, raising a glass? Since its debut earlier this year, the series has shown us how a tough-guy noir drama can be told in five cocktails, what we didn't know about the history of the martini and its signature glass, and what a handful of the city's top mixologists will shake, stir, and pour when challenged to create a rum cocktail on the spot. Now, with the seasonal swing fully under way this weekend, Digestible Feats is proving itself a two-fisted drinker, with a double shot of programming for
Austin's adult-beverage enthusiasts.
First up is the Holiday Stroll, coinciding with the annual Downtown celebration that follows the sing-along with KUT's John Aielli at the Texas Capitol. With the aid of a scenic designer/visual artist and a sound designer, Fusebox will transform the vacant retail space in the old Reynolds-Penland Building into a pop-up bar with mixologists serving craft cocktails inspired by the idea of "gift." Saturday, Dec. 3, 7pm, 721 Congress. Free.
The following night brings Spirit Salon #2: American Whiskey. In each installment of this ongoing series, the East Side Show Room's crack bartenders provide a lively introduction to a particular spirit, complete with tastings. This month, the subject is American whiskey, with six types, including rye and bourbon, being sampled, plus a pair of classic cocktails. Sunday, Dec. 4, 5pm, East Side Show Room, 1100 E. Sixth. $35. Limited to 30 guests.
