An irreverent look at Cuban life, the film is also a tender, passionate, primal love story charged with surreal situations.

The Debt is set in a small village called El Paraíso. The local pawnbroker, to whom almost everyone owes money, is poisoned and dies a long, agonizing death. The villagers recover their pawned items and get on with their lives, but the ghost of the pawnbroker comes back to haunt them. Ultimately, the villagers suffer for their sins and plan a process of repentance.
