Monkeys Gone to Heaven

Meet the Pixies

On the evening of Thursday, July 29, in Austin, noon Friday loomed in Brisbane, Australia. At 9pm sharp, Central Daylight Time, Pixies guitarist Joey Santiago and bandmate David Lovering called their respective Chronicle inquirers from their tour stop Down Under. An hour later, bandleader Charles Thompson and Kim Deal phoned another pair of writers. Actually, the bassist was 20 minutes late checking in, though she also stayed on the line the longest. With the Pixies performing their landmark Doolittle at the Austin Music Hall next Tuesday and Wednesday (the latter is sold-out), ours seemed the perfect way to Meet the Beatles, so to speak.
