I-35: REBUILDING THE LOWER DECK
Fasten your seatbelts. The lower level of I-35 is slated for a dramatic makeover, and nobody's promising an easy ride during the process, scheduled to begin in August 2000. TxDOT will close parts of the roadway between Airport and Manor to create safer entry and exit lanes. Here are the major elements of the plan:
Three bridges -- at 381/2 St., 32nd St., and Manor Road -- will be closed while the roadway under them is widened. During reconstruction, east-west traffic will have to detour north to Airport or south to M.L.K. to get across the freeway. The good news is that frontage road signal lights will be temporarily eliminated at 381/2 and 32nd for a faster, smoother ride.
NEW AUXILIARY LANES
All entrances and exits on the lower deck would be via new "auxiliary lanes," similar to MoPac's on/off ramps. These new lanes (shown in red) would require widening the roadway under each of the bridges between M.L.K. and Airport.
Southbound, the 381/2 St. exit will be eliminated, and the entrance at 40th St. will be moved a block north, closer to Hancock Center.
Northbound, the 32nd St. exit will be eliminated, and the entrance near 30th will be moved farther south, to near Manor Road. (Both new ramps are shown in red; the ramps being removed are dotted lines.)
