Hotrod Hillbillies
Let's Alcoholass (HRHB)Stop me if you've heard this one before. And you have heard this one before. Like a Fox police-chase special, Let's Alcoholass offers both lowest-common-denominator cheap thrills and no surprises whatsoever. See if you can guess which message is not contained in this half-hour of rote psychobilly: A.) Drinking is fun. B.) Cars and women alike are a handful, but can also give you a nice ride. C.) The U.S. should investigate alternative energy sources to lessen its dependence on foreign oil. D.)Ex-girlfriends tend to be on the bitchy side. To give credit where credit is due, "Comfortable Couch" is a pleasant honky-tonk vignette about the upside of fighting with the girlfriend/wife, and the playing is crisp and proficient throughout, especially on raucous near-instrumental "Chickens and Pigs." Still, it's hard to imagine any Supersuckers or Hank Williams III fan being overly impressed. Not when the best the Hillbillies can come up with is overdubbing female sex noises over a "Jack the Ripper" clone ("Dragstrip Demon") or vowing never to fall in love because they'd rather keep hanging out with the guys ("Never"). Let's Alcoholass is only 30 minutes long, but that's still time better spent watching Comedy Central's The Man Show. At least that has chicks on trampolines.
