Aztex dispense player awards, UT and St. Ed’s start conference play on the road, and more

The Austin Aztex held their end-of-season awards event Tuesday. Player awards went to Yordany Alvarez, Michael Callahan, Miguel Gallardo-Aparicio, and Chronicle "Best of Austin" winner Eddie Johnson. Also of note: coach Adrian Heath's "promise" that the Aztex will be in the playoffs next year. Next-to-last reminder: You can still see your Aztex in action this year, when they host Monterrey, Wednesday, Oct. 7, at Round Rock ISD's Palace on Parmer. Tickets ($25, kids $15) at www.austinaztex.com or Soccer USA.

The UT Longhorns dropped to 3-5 after losing last weekend to Washington State, 4-0, and New Mexico, 2-0. They start conference play on the road this weekend at Oklahoma and Baylor.

The nationally ranked St. Edward's women got another shutout win Sunday, beating Texas A&M-Commerce, 3-0. They too start conference play on the road this week, at UT-Permian Basin and Dallas Baptist. The St. Ed's men have the week off.

Fox TV networks outbid ESPN for this year's European Champions League broadcast rights, and the payoff for viewers is a lot more games, shown live and delayed on Fox Soccer Channel, Fox Sports Net, and Fox Sports en Español. This coming Tuesday, Sept. 29, at 1:30pm, for example, choose from Sevilla at Rangers on FSC, Olympiakos at Arsenal on FSN, or Dynamo Kiev at Barcelona on FSE; Wednesday at 1:30pm there's Wolfsburg at Manchester United on FSC, and Marseille at Real Madrid on FSE. In all, Fox will show some 221 ECL games. Also on FSC, three CONCACAF Champions League games next week: At 7pm Tuesday, Sept. 29, the Columbus Crew hosts Costa Rican champs Saprissa. The next night is a doubleheader: San Juan Jabloteh at D.C. United at 7pm, and Pachuca at Houston Dynamo at 9pm.

The FIFA Under-20 World Cup starts this week in Egypt. The U.S. is in a tough group, with Germany (9am Saturday, Sept. 26, ESPN Classic), Cameroon (11:45am Tuesday, Sept. 29, ESPN2), and South Korea (11:45am Friday, Oct. 2, ESPN2). Knockout stage continues Oct. 5-16.
