The New York Deli

N. I-35 & Hwy 620 in Round Rock, 246-1108

Displaced Yankees in the Austin metro area have found their home away from home in this friendly joint at the busiest intersection in Round Rock. Decorated with Big Apple memorabilia, the NY Deli offers kosher-style delicacies such as lox & bagels, knishes, latkes, chopped liver, plus hearty deli sandwiches and subs named for celebrities. In addition to thin crust pizza by the pie and the slice, they sell both Chicago-style and New York pushcart-style all-beef vienna hot dogs dressed with the appropriate toppings. Top it all off with a cannoli or a slab of New York cheesecake and wash it down with a Dr. Brown's soda.

Formerly an outlet for the Atlanta-based chain called My Friend's Place, this pleasant little shop tucked in the Anderson Village Shopping Center maintains the former menu with some delicious additions. They've got sandwich sizes to fit every appetite and price range. The scrumptious Chicken Salad (with apples, celery, and pecans) is available in sandwiches and by the scoop in a salad as are the fresh tuna and egg salads. The house potato & bacon soup is a regular feature and there's also a daily soup such as garden vegetable, chicken & wild rice, or broccoli cheese to pair with salads or sandwiches. Good cookies, brownies, and cakes for dessert.

All sandwiches are served with chips and pickle spear but pretzels, fries, or potato salad are also available. Big, juicy burgers, chicken breasts, and patty melts come hot off the grill with fries and pickle spears. Austin is home to the prototype of Schlotzsky's Deli & Marketplace stores, where the company attempts to change its image from simple sandwich shop to a more full-service restaurant concept. In addition to the longtime local favorite Original Sandwich, there are now soups, salads, cold sandwiches, and personal-sized pizzas. Sodas, teas, and a full line of coffee drinks are on hand and there is a small, affordable list of wines by the glass. Breads, pastries, cookies, tarts, and cakes from the Bread Alone bakery provide plenty of temptation. Schlotzsky's is so identified with Austin, travelers will even find them at the Austin/Bergstrom Int'l Airport.
