Dear Editor, First I would like to apologize to the riders in the peloton I passed in the wrong lane on Sunday morning, yelling “Single file in the bike lane” repeatedly as I went. My understanding of both cycling etiquette and common courtesy says that when a bike lane exists cyclists should confine themselves to it, regardless of the number of cyclists. Of course I understand exceptions for Critical Mass rides, along with the necessity of moving into and taking up a lane when needing to make a turn, for example. And for streets where there either isn’t a bike lane or there are sharrows or some other indication cyclists and others need to share the street – claim your lane! But please don’t take an entire lane when it’s not needed – you do other cyclists a disservice by giving other folks a reason to object to us. And to the clever young man who, after I stated I was also a cyclist, quipped “No you’re not sir, you’re in a car,” I am compelled to point out that by that reductive logic I was actually a pedestrian at the time of your comment.
