Water Is A Crucial Issue!

Dear Editor,
Thank you for covering this story [“Point Austin: When the Well Runs Dry,” News, Oct. 11]. It is a loud alarm to me, but unfortunately few will pay heed. Instead, our city leaders will concern themselves with bike trails, a crappy train system, and gerrymandering the new Council maps rather than focus on meeting basic city services like water for its citizens. I remember the debate over the new water treatment plant a couple of years ago. I only pray that we will have water to treat.
Wouldn't it be refreshing to hear about a visionary leader who is looking for ways to secure water for this area's future? Desalination? Water from the Arctic, or the Great Lakes? Or are we going to wait until the multinationals – now buying up water systems and water rights – solve it for us, and at what cost? How much are their lobbyists paying our current leaders to stay numb on this issue, or are they just that self-centered that the only thing that matters is getting elected to the next post? Where are the Dwight Eisenhower visionaries who made America's infrastructure so great? These are questions I would like you to ask.
Yes, we need to continue to conserve, and we are changing minds and habits.
But please do stay on this story, and ask our leaders what we really are going to do about this. We have 100-150 people moving into Central Texas every day, depending on who you believe. What does that do for our future with so many more straws into the water cooler?
