Elections in May not a Problem

RECEIVED Fri., Sept. 30, 2011

[Re: "Point Austin: Voter Suppression Made Easy," News, Sept. 30] Please. City elections in May are well publicized, everyone with an interest in the governing of the city has an easy opportunity to vote. Certainly, in a November election, more voters will turn out because they care about state and national races. And, of course, while they are there many will think they should go ahead and vote on the local matters even if they know very little about them. On the other hand, if the voters don't come to vote in May, it is because they do not care enough to do so. No one is running around discouraging people from voting. Far more ludicrous to me, and indefensible on its face, is to argue that having an election in May constitutes "voter suppression."
