Dear Editor, Oil spill fun facts: The rate of spillage in the Gulf is about 35,000 to 60,000 barrels/day (1.47 million to 2.52 million gallons) according to The Washington Post (June 15). There are 42 gallons to a U.S. barrel of crude oil. There are approximately 7.35 barrels to a ton. For comparison, the Exxon Valdez incident spilled about 221,000 barrels into Prince Wiliam Sound, and the area has yet to fully recover. Nigeria supplies the U.S. with about 40% of the oil we import. The Niger Delta has experienced some 2,000-plus spills since the early 1970s, adding up to more than 1.5 million tons or some 11,025,000 barrels. Drill, baby, drill indeed.
