Time for Some Flat Track

Women's flat-track derby season kicks off this Sunday

It's the other March Madness! This Sunday, March 2, women's flat-track derby resumes normal service locally when the Texas Rollergirls start the 2008 season with a doubleheader at the Playland Skate center.

The season rumbles out with the Hustlers taking on the Honky Tonk Heartbreakers, and then the Hotrod Honeys get their long-awaited Championship rematch against last year's victors, the Hell Marys. (For the civic-minded amongst you, this week's spotlight charity selected by the teams will be the YWCA of Greater Austin.) Tickets available online now or at the doors, which open at 6.30pm. With some high-profile retirements, including Dinah-Mite, Tinkerhell, Trouble, and Buckshot Betsy, there's a lot of new blood on the track: and after her domination at this year's Whammies, this could be the year that Rice Rocket becomes the standard to beat.

And if you're wondering how you'll survive the season, waiting for that first Sunday of the month, the Alamo Drafthouse has announced three screenings in late March/early April of Hell on Wheels, the documentary about the rebirth of Roller Derby and the subsequent split between the Texas Rollergirls and the Lonestar Rollergirls.
