Sophie's Choice: You Were Expecting Mamet Mia!?
Mamma Mia! is the gayest portrayal of heterosexuality this side of Pirates of Penzance. (Officemate and Arts Editor Robert Faires makes a case for Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, aka Seven Brides for Seven Brides, but my Pirates reference point is Rex Smith, so I am sticking with it.) Trust me. It's gay. It's so gay, with it's breaking out into song and heroes swinging in on ropes and all around prancing about that it actually makes heterosexuality look almost tolerable. Almost desirable. Dare we say, romantic? This week,

Gay Marriage Ripples
No, no, not what's served at a cheap dyke's wedding reception, but the ongoing reverberations of California's landmark decision. Just last night, lawmakers in Massachusetts voted to allow out-of-staters to come and enjoy the right to gay marry as recognized by their state. Non-chusettsians used to have to wait 90 days. Now, they can impulsively take the plunge just like any other red-blooded romantic (well, after figuring out how to get there). Meanwhile, back in California,

Wiping Away Gender
In response to numerous transgender boys in need of a place to go wee, a Thai school built a third option: the "transsexual toilet", equipped even with its own signage … decidedly much more fashionable than the boring iconography of old.

The Way We Ball(s)
LGBT watchdogs are all up in yet another kerfluffle over yet another deemed-homophobic ad. This time, it's Nike. What's the big deal? Oh. There's some punctuation missing. The ad copy should read:
Tha Tain't, Right?

I Was Living for the Day, Pussycat: Estelle Getty 1923 - 2008
So sad to hear that the delightfully diminutive Estelle Getty, aka Sophia, the consummate li'l Italian mama from the Golden Girls, and active supporter of LGBT rights and AIDS research, passed away July 22, just a few days shy of her 85th birthday. (You'll indulge your Gay Place host a moment of silence, please, as Sophia bears more than a passing resemblance in both looks and attitude to yours truly's own li'l Italian mama, and li'l Italian mama's mama.) Perhaps in tribute, some local curator might call Lenora Claire to bring her naughty, naughty Golden Gals Gone Wild art show here to Austin. (The collection includes work from one of our fave artists – okay, MySpace friend artists… – My Secret Life in Glass.)

Hey: Gays Are People, Too!
Who knew that dentist and doctor offices and auto mechanic waiting rooms were such steaming hotbeds of gay gossip? Watch out, Readers Digest!

Get on the D-Lister's A-List
... or Gay List. Dang, Kathy Griffin sure has been gayin' it up a lot lately, what with her trip to the Sydney Gay Mardi Gras (see photo) and her recent recognition from GLAAD. KG has, however, always been a friend to teh ghey. Personally, I am liking her a lot more since her hysterically toppy turn with Anderson Cooper as they watched the ball drop together this past New Year's.

Anyhoooo,
