Just a Just World

St. Edwards blocks Equality Texas from Internship Fair

Hey! When did that get there?
Hey! When did that get there?

Equality Texas blogger, Lindsay Marsh, says it better than I could, and she speaks from her position as a Catholic and St. Ed's alum. Whoa.

Now we here at the GP blog give a shit about a lot of things - ponies, parties, and a just world for all the children - and we mean ALL the children. Sad that St. Edward's University doesn't feel the same way - or do they? Marsh points to St. Edward's mission statement which reads:

"St. Edward's expresses its Catholic identity by communicating the dignity of the human person as created in the image of God, by stressing the obligation of all people to pursue a more just world, and by providing opportunities for religious studies and participation in campus ministry. St. Edward's seeks to provide an environment in which freely chosen beliefs can be deepened and expressed."

And Marsh rightly points out that such discrimination is a top-down affair and not grass-roots (i.e. non of those sweet and brainy co-eds would dream of partaking in homo-hate).

It's well within the scope of St. Edwards (as a private University) to bar any organization they wish from any event they organize. They just may need to ammend their mission statement a bit:

"St. Edward's expresses its Catholic identity by communicating the dignity of the human person as created in the image of God, by stressing the obligation of all people to pursue a more just world (except for queers, transwomen and transmen, gays, lesbians, bisexuals, intersex, and those expressing any non-normative gender), and by providing opportunities for religious studies and participation in campus ministry. St. Edward's seeks to provide an environment in which freely chosen beliefs can be deepened and expressed (except if you believe in working with social justice organizations that in any way contradict Catholic doctrine)."

It'll be interesting to see what the queer hilltoppers on St. Ed's campus cook up in response to this.
