Be There or Be Square
UT's Cronkite Plaza unveiling tonight
By Monica Riese, 3:28PM, Thu. Apr. 19, 2012
By now we hope you've read Douglas Brinkley's feature this week on the dearly departed Walter Cronkite and the creation of Earth Day. Continue the celebrations tonight on the University of Texas campus.
The UT College of Communication will dedicate the space in the Jesse H. Jones Communications Complex to Cronkite, the CBS anchor who was a UT alum and former Daily Texan staffer and who became the voice of the university in its "We're Texas" advertising campaign. Also unveiled tonight will be Ben Rubin's digital art installation titled "And That's Just the Way It Is," pictured here. The piece projects selections from some of Cronkite's reports onto the face of the adjacent building in a choreographed, kinetic display.
The evening's events kick off shortly, with a Q&A with Rubin in the ACES building from 4:30 to 5:30pm. Beginning at 6pm, speakers and students will officially dedicate the plaza, honoring Cronkite, as well as his legacy to the school and beyond. At 8:30pm, check out "And That's Just the Way It Is" in action.
If you miss the events tonight, be sure to stop by the plaza and art on your own time, or visit the Briscoe Center for American History to spend a little time digging into the complete Cronkite papers.
