AISD Announces Transfer Freezes

Number of schools stays the same, but names change.

With school class size a major issue for the proposed Austin Independent School District bond election, Superintendent Pat Forgione has informed the board of trustees that 33 primary and elementary schools will be undergoing full or partial transfer freezes. That's the same number as last year, but there's changes in the list.

Akins High School is off the list but three middle schools (Bedichek, Burnet and Murchison) have been added, as are Baranoff, Clayton and Perez elementaries. Elementaries have the biggest switches: Casis and Mathews go from a partial to a full freeze, while Bryker goes from full to partial, and Graham, Metz, Oak Hill, Pickle and Wooten come off the list.

The list also includes four elementaries – Linder, Barrington, Hart and Langford – that are being looked at by the Citizens 2008 Bond Advisory Committee for extra classrooms via bond dollars.

The schools under a full freeze are:
High Schools: Anderson, Austin, Bowie and McCallum
Middle: Bailey, Bedichek, Burnet, Kealing, Mendez, Murchison, and Small
Elementary: Baranoff, Barrington, Casis, Clayton, Cook, Harris, Hart, Houston, Langford, Lee, Linder, Mathews, Mills, Odom, Perez, Rodriguez, Walnut Creek, Widen, and Wooldridge.

Three elementary schools have a partial ban: Bryker Woods will be able to accept grades two and six; Doss, grade 2; and Hill grades two and three.
