For nearly six years, DJ Divorcée has been bringing the best mixes to Austin clubs like Cheer Up Charlies, ENVY, Elysium, and Chain Drive. Discovering his calling early on, he started out in San Francisco’s Deep House scene promoting events and booking DJs for raves. Blame Divorcée for that one white boy on the dancefloor shamelessly dancing half naked on a box with a cocktail in hand – not to disclose a certain someone's early 20s (mine) in too much tragic detail. House, disco, twerk… they're all in his funkhouse.

Peña, says the best thing about being a DJ “is for somebody to come up to me and be like, ‘I had a rough week and I just wanted to dance, and tonight you made my night.’” Providing relief from the work day blues, “is really about forgetting who you are, forgetting that you’re a starving artist, CEO, or just some kid that just moved here a few weeks ago, and letting loose.”

Right now, Divorcée's focus is Deep Vogue House: “It’s got just enough kick to make you want to death drop, but some great vibes that you can just shuffle your feet to as well. It has great energy and is very queer oriented.”

When Divorcée isn’t twerking behind the DJ booth, alter-ego Peña works in IT at a local cable provider. Although he’s grown nostalgic for the days when he could ride his bike downtown from his Eastside abode, he still enjoys how Austin reminds him of the bay area, and how “when you’re in the scene, you know everybody.” Someday, he aspires to throw an all queer rave. The weirdest thing he’s ever eaten is durian fruit, which is surprisingly sweet, he says, but “smells like rotting flesh.” Let's just take his word for it.
