Ugandan LGBT activist Kasha Jacqueline Nabagesera articulates the wonder created from the reports of Uganda's first Gay Pride celebration.
Police crackdowns, internalized prejudice, and a legislative body that is seriously considering the "Kill the Gays Bill" did not dissuade LGBT activists from hosting a rainbow dusted festival full of trans-activists, drag queens, and bad ass queers.
Americans and the rest of the Western world do risk something by publicly coming out and supporting LGBT issues. We've no intention of undercutting our own activists' contributions. However, it just boggles the mind to think of what these people are doing and how much danger they put themselves in every day, let alone with the public display they've created here.
The police did raid gatherings and carted demonstrators off to prison. Fortunately, after a few hours, they were released and returned to what must have been the most joyous afterparty.
Hell to the yes. Go Uganda.
