It is hard to believe our beloved music venue and nightclub Emo's has been a part of what makes this city so unconventional and eccentric for two decades now. Sure enough, this month will mark the club's 20th anniversary, and to celebrate, Emo's has prepared a party-perfect lineup featuring Neon Indian, Atmosphere, and Hot Water Music.
Before we go any further with the party details, you should know some of the backstory on how the Emo's we know today came into existence.
Twenty years ago in September of 1992, Austin's prominent nightclub was born, and, not surprisingly, it all began with a guy named Emo. Austin was not the birthplace of the nightclub, however. Originally in '89, Emo's was a punk-rock club in Houston, but in September 2001, the venue closed its doors, passing the torch to the only city suited to keep the diverse vibes of Emo's alive: Austin, TX. Since then, there have been two locations who have proudly held the name: Austin's original Emo's on 6th Street, now closed, and the recently opened Emo's East, which, compared to its predecessor, is bigger, better-ventilated, and bears a high stage that allows the whole crowd to see its act. This new location on East Riverside will host the anniversary shows.
Throughout September, to incorporate the past and present of Emo's legacy, the venue has scheduled a celebratory lineup that is nothing short of terrific, and everyone is invited to relish the month-long, music-filled birthday party. Below are the anniversary shows Emo's has prepared:
9/15: Neon Indian & Auto Body
9/22: Hot Water Music
9/25: Guided By Voices
9/26: Atmosphere
9/30: Kreator & Accept
We can't wait either.
Also, heads up: starting on Wednesday 8/29, Emo's will be running a ticket blitz, offering discounts on some of the anniversary shows with the code "20yearsyoung" in preparation for the month of September. Tickets are available at the Emo's website as well as at their ticket outlets Waterloo Records, End of an Ear Records, and Trailer Space Records. Do not miss out on the chance to commemorate our veteran, Emo's Austin, by celebrating the past twenty years and toasting to the next. Happy birthday, Emo's!
