QUEERWAD SPOKEN HERE We know what you're thinking, and we agree: Austin, Texas, is one of the finest cities in the universe – a real free-to-be-you-and-me kinda place, where you can walk down the avenue arm-in-arm with your sweetie and you probably won't get the shit kicked out of you (which is not to say you should let your guard down – stay frosty, my darlings). And South by Southwest is a pretty great intro. So you've already figured out that it's a cool place, gay-friendly and all that ... but ...: what to do and where to go beyond all the official Festival folderol? What's Q-friendly at the SXSQ? Let your new BFFs here at the Gay Place guide you. For starters, check this column in each of the dailies, and look up our online resources:

A VOICE THAT CAN MAKE THE WALLS COME A-TUMBLIN' When we first heard the raves about recent L.A./Seattle transplant Lisa Marshall, we thought, "Yeah, another girl with a guitar from the West Coast. Welcome to Austin, Texas! Good luck!" Then we heard her sing. That voice. The Walls of Jericho came a-tumblin' down, and as it turns out, Gabriel's horns were on break: Lisa Marshall's got it covered. She's soul. Not neo-soul, but soul. Her covers run deep (Mavis, Etta – and not the inaugural dance hit, Dorothy Moore, Candi Staton, etc.). And her originals not only fit right in, but are fine enough to reside there, snuggled right up next to the songs of her heroines. Really. She's all over town, all week, with and without her band – make that local supergroup, featuring guitar ace Russ Scanlon and the understatedly soulful Mary Harsh (both of Son y No Son), plus the Greyhounds' rad trap-set-smacker Johnny Radelat. This afternoon and tomorrow night, as you stumble down the north side of Sixth Street, consider taking a listen for yourself. Today, 4-5:30pm; Sat., 8-10pm. Nuno's on Sixth, 422 E. Sixth. www.lisamarshallmusic.com.
THERE'S BOUNCE AND THERE'S SISSY BOUNCE What is this "bounce"? It's just what it sounds like: It's rap to make your booty bounce, and sissy bounce is its deliciously queer step-cuz. And it's all landed on our heads. Friday, Saturday, Sunday! The official SXSW New Orleans Bounce showcase (which integrates and does not shy away from the sissy variety) happens Saturday at Submerged, but before all that is the Mad Decent Carniville featuring DJ Jubilee, Major Lazer, Ms. Tee, Magnolia Shorty, and Vockah Redu. Having recently witnessed the power and grace of Mr. Redu, I must tell you, I am so excited I can barely keep my pants on. Trust your buddies at the Gay Place, this is a must-see and -do. See you on the ... backside. More about Saturday and Sunday appearances in tomorrow's daily. Mexican American Cultural Center, 600 Red River, www.austincarniville.com.
MARGARET CHO & GIRL IN A COMA One right after the other, just like the good Lord intended. 10:25pm. Buffalo Billiards, 201 E. Sixth. www.buffalobilliards.com/austin.
GOD-DES & SHE Sure, famous "our song was on The L Word" are now new Austinites, and they know how to "Lick It," but they also wanna "Love You Better." They moved here because they love us, so let's give 'em a nice juicy CenTex welcome. And for you out-of-towners, come check out one more thing Austin, Texas, can brag about. 10:45pm. Dizzy Rooster, 306 E. Sixth. www.god-desandshe.com
