Salvage, Recover, Rebuild

After asking able bodies to hold back until recovery efforts could be organized, Williamson County Emergency Management has now issued a call for volunteers to assist in salvaging and clearing small debris, so that families whose homes were destroyed or damaged in the killer storm can begin rebuilding. Individuals or volunteer groups should call the Tornado Recovery Command Post in Jarrell to receive work assignments for this weekend, Sat-Sun, Jun 14-15. 512/746-4309.

Longer Days, Shorter Skirts

There's no skirting around it: It's Solstice and the Cornerstone Gay & Lesbian Center has programs and services heating up for the summer. Their latest Club Skirt fundraiser singles mingle event for women is Thu, Jun 19, 7-11pm again at the Zilker Clubhouse. Dubbed Solstice Skirt in honor of this longest day of the year, the event falls on an eve of a howling full moon. Price is $10 for admission, dancing with deejay Lenne Deggedingsize, beer, wine, non-alchy beverages, and all the chicks you can... Oh, wait, it says snacks, all the snacks you can.... 708-1515.

Come Out Wherever You Are

Women of Austin want to know: Where are all the Black Lesbidykes? There is a planning meeting, Sat, Jun 14, 4pm, at W.A.T.E.R. (Women's Access To Electronic Resources), 109 Johanna, for a new organization which will hopefully address the question and create a support-social group for Austin's black lesbidyke community. 444-1672.

I Feel Geeky!

Oh so geeky!/I feel geeky and techie and wired/And I pity any geek who isn't wired tonight! (Tonight! Tonight! Won't be just any byte!) Sondheim would surely be rolling in his grave (were he dead) at least as much as Shakespeare was when Westside Story came out... But gee, Chino, you've read this far, you might as well keep going to find out what the heck we're free associating. The Austin Eastside Story is a foundation which focuses on bringing youth and technology together, emphasizing computer literacy to support school subjects, and encouraging telecommunications and multi-media skills. They are seeking volunteers for their Community Technology/Youth Camp, Mon-Fri through Fri, Aug 8, 9am-5pm. Computer gurus and non-techies alike are welcome, as many skills are needed. 322-2350.

It Wouldn't Gill Ya

Austin State School is looking for a few good fins to swim and swim in their annual Swimathon. The swim isn't until Sat, Jul 19; so start swishing that tail and get registered. 371-6048.

The Heat Was Hot

It's already in full swing, but there's still time to contribute to Austin Family Eldercare's Summer Fan Drive. Last year, over 1,900 fans were distributed to low income elderly and others in need of help in beating Texas' sweltering heat. Donations of working fans will be accepted at any area fire station. Cash donations to purchase fans may be sent to: Family Eldercare, 3710 Cedar St., Austin, TX, 78705. Volunteers are also needed to help deliver. 459-4FAN.

Think Freely

You only have a few weeks to get your free thoughts together if you wish to apply for this scholarship. The national Freedom From Religion Foundation is offering cash scholarships to Austin high school seniors. Winners will be chosen from essays submitted on topics relating to the separation of church and state and free thinking. The deadline is Tue, Jul 1. 608/256-8900.

Hop on, Pop

Accompany your pop to the idyllic Umlauf Sculpture Garden & Museum, 605 Robert E. Lee, on Father's Day, this Sun, Jun 15, and the old man will get in free. Or don't tell him about the special admission deal and let him think you are a successful bigshot. 445-5582.
