“We are deeply saddened by the death of Family member Dan "Bee" Spears, long time friend and bassist for Willie Nelson and Family,” Nelson’s website posted. Spears, who died on Friday, Dec. 9 outside Nashville, had played with Willie Nelson since 1968.
Spears' bass was an essential element with the Family. Never showy or ponderous, Bee Spears held down the bottom line of Willie Nelson's music with Texas muscle and Lone Star sinew.
“We are still in shock and gathering details as the day continues,” the website said over the weekend. “He apparently died of accidental exposure at his property.”
Donations or memorials in Spears’ name may be made to NARAS MusiCares, 1904 Wedgewood, Nashville, TN., 37212.
