Make 'Em Dance: The Hackberry Ramblers Story
D: John WhiteheadThe venerable Hackberry Ramblers have been makin' 'em dance and keepin' 'em happy since their inception in 1933 right to this very day. Co-founded by fiddle player Luderin Darbone and multi-instrumentalist Edwin Duhon in Lake Charles, La., the Ramblers have touched upon and contributed to almost every form of folk music imaginable. Cajun, Western swing, Dixieland, country and western, zydeco, and rhythm and blues are just a few of the genres that the Ramblers toss into their Crock-Pot, mix up, stir around, and serve up to their eager audiences. The Ramblers, at their advanced ages, may not be the tightest outfit around, but what they lack in technical precision they more than compensate for with authenticity, heart, and charm. Their persistence has paid off with an international following, appearances on national television, and a Grammy nomination for their 1998 album, Deep Water. The durable Ramblers only reaffirm what B.B. King, Bob Dylan, and the Rolling Stones could have told you all along: There's no expiration date on a musician's career and you've gotta rock till you drop.
