• The Natural Epicurean Academy of Culinary Arts (1700 S. Lamar, 476-2276) hosts an open house and information session to promote the professional culinary program. It's free, but please RSVP to [email protected]. Saturday, March 12, 10am-noon.

Brooklyn Brewery brings its successful amateur cook-off series, the Food Experiments, to Austin with the Pork Experiment at Club de Ville (900 Red River). More than 20 local cooks will prepare pork dishes to compete for cash, prizes, and a round-trip ticket to NYC. The crowd and a panel of judges will taste samples and pick winners. $20 in advance, $25 at the door. A portion of the proceeds benefits YouthLaunch. More info at www.thefoodexperiments.com. • The second annual Austin Bacon Takedown returns to Emo's (603 Red River) this weekend. Some of Austin's best cooks will demonstrate their expertise in preparing dishes with Hormel Black Label bacon. Prizes include a year's supply of bacon and brand-name cookware and gadgets. A panel of local judges will pick the winners. Contestants can still register with organizer Matt Timms at [email protected]. Tickets are $10. Sunday, March 13, 3pm.

Foodspotting and BlackBerry present the official South by Southwest Street Food Fest featuring some of Austin's most popular food trucks during SXSW Interactive. Free for Conference badge holders. See complete details at www.sxsw.foodspotting.com. Second & Brazos. Sunday, March 13, 11am-4pm.

Faraday's Kitchen Store (1501 RR 620 N., 266-5666) offers kids' cooking classes during spring break. Each class is $40, and reservations are necessary. Morning sessions, 9:30am-noon, are for ages 7-10; afternoon sessions, 1-3:30pm, are for ages 11-14. Monday-Tuesday, March 14-15.

• Cookbook author Rebecca Lang will present a class based on recipes from her new book, Quick-Fix Southern: Homemade Hospitality in 30 Minutes or Less, at the Central Market Cooking School (4001 N. Lamar, 206-1014, www.centralmarket.com). $50; reservations necessary. Tuesday, March 15, 6:30-9pm.
