The Austin Dance Festival is a modern dance festival (coming in April 2019) that produces professional showcases, a youth concert, master classes, artist interviews, pop-up community dances, and a dance-on-film screening. Artists working in the fields of modern dance, postmodern dance, and contemporary dance are invited to apply for the professional showcases. Youth companies may apply for the Youth Edition Concert. This new exhibition, organized by the Vitra Design Museum and the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, presents the work of more than 120 artists and designers, displaying sculpture, prints, fashion, furniture, film, photography, apps, maps, digital comics, and more to show how African design generates innovative design approaches and solutions with worldwide relevance.

Three artists with Eastern roots blend ancient techniques with Western influences "to reveal a highly curated collection of art that goes deeper than the canvas." In Joeng and Choon Yun’s case, the canvas is bark from South Korean Dak trees, put through a 2,000-year-old process of boiling, beating, cleaning, and drying. Rimi Yang’s artistic style also bridges the cultural divide with Japanese block print and 19th-century portraiture.

The Austin History Center's latest exhibit spotlights local efforts to create social change over the decades, including the Civil Rights and Women's Liberation movements. Residents are invited to upload personal photos of recent marches and rallies for inclusion.

If someone's going to be presenting other forms of life, how lucky for those forms and for the viewers of those forms, that it's the New York–based artist Huma Bhabha, here offering an unforgettable array of human, alien, god, plant, animal, and machinelike entities, rendered in her unique combination of representation and abstraction, in two dimensions and three, in whatever media works best. Celebrated in professional art circles, welcomed with a mixture of wonder and fear by ordinary citizens with eyes to see, Bhabha's creations provide an infusion of transgenre brilliance and savagery that Austin, in particular, needs right about now.

Prize juror Sedrick Huckaby has selected French Canadian sculptor Shanie Tomassini as this year's winner, and so the artist receives a full exhibition of her work, featuring oversized sculptures, fountains, and negative-space forms installed throughout the Umlauf’s six-acre site. Mia Carameros and Holly Wilson's work incorporates the idea of the shadow both literally and figuratively, through Carameros' botanical creations and Wilson's narrative sculptures.

Candace Hicks' new show features a series of rooms constructed in miniature and vignettes created from cut paper, each reconstructing a tableau plucked from crime fiction, offering viewers the experience of playing a detective searching for clues. See our review right here.
