Nelda Wells Spears’ Dance Party
Eat! Drink! Get Down! Register to vote!

Travis County has a pretty high voter registration rate, but former state Rep. Glen Maxey has said that nothing short of 100% is good enough, and he’s made that the basis of his challenge to 20-year incumbent Nelda Wells Spears for the office of Travis County Tax Assessor-Collector (and Voter Registrar).
Spears’ response? Throw a kegger!
Okay, we’re kidding, but she is throwing a party on Sunday, Oct. 7, 4-11pm, at the main Travis County Tax Office at 5501 Airport Blvd. The invitation says, “We invite all interested student organizations, fraternity and sorority members, neighborhood association representatives, local business owners, civic and community organizations, houses of worship, high school administrators, government officials and our fantastic pool of voter registrar volunteers” to the “Voter Registration and Celebration.” Now personally, we’re hard-pressed to think of a worse way to spend a Sunday afternoon than hanging out in a hot parking lot on Airport Boulevard with frat boys, but hey – they do promise tents/canopies to block the sun, and entertainment and food. But no beer. (Actually, Nelda, if you want the frat rats to come out, a keg might not be such a bad idea.)
Seriously, though, if you plan to vote in the Nov. 6 election and are not currently registered to vote, the registration deadline is Oct. 9, so this might be a good chance to get signed up. Organizations wanting to participate should RSVP to 854-9473, ext. 35197 or e-mail Clare Cunningham.
