Dixie Chicks Win Grammy
Apparently, slamming George Bush won't end your career after all.
By Lee Nichols, 8:18PM, Sun. Feb. 11, 2007
Austin's George Bush-slamming country trio the Dixie Chicks just won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year for "Not Ready to Make Nice," along with their co-songwriter Dan Wilson. So much for their anti-war outspokenness destroying their career. Congratulations.
EDIT: And now they just added Best Country Album to their trophy case, and Natalie Maines just got off one of the funniest lines in the history of Grammys by quoting The Simpsons. Damn, it's great to live in America where free speech is ultimately rewarded.
EDIT 2: Holy shit, they just scored the hat trick - a third Grammy for Album of the Year. Against a hell of a field. As a former music critic for the Chronicle, I should probably know this, but: Has Austin ever had a Grammy haul like this?
EDIT 3: Whoops, I think I made a mistake; I think that earlier one was for Record of the Year, and now they've won Album of the Year, so that would make four for the night. And wait, I see they also scored Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocal, so that makes five. And Rick Rubin got producer of the year, so it's sorta six. Suck on that, Dubya.
And one last edit: If you want some great comedy, check out the predictable thrashing about by the ultraconservative clowns over at the Free Republic forums. My two favorite comments were "Thus the entertainment industry once again gives the American public a one finger salute" and "So they won awards for an album no one bought and concerts no one went to."
Um, lessee … would that be the 65% of the "America public" that is against the war? And double platinum constitutes "an album no one bought"?
I really wonder what color those guys see when they look at the sky.
