Two former Aztex players to play in MLS Cup Final, and more

When Real Salt Lake lines up against the L.A. Galaxy in the MLS Cup Final this Sunday, there will be two players on the roster who spent a good part of this season playing for the Austin Aztex. David Horst played in 10 solid games for the Aztex on defense; Jean Alexandre played in nine as a striker and was the team's second-leading scorer, including the goal of the year in Puerto Rico. A good reason, perhaps, to root for RSL. The MLS Cup Final is at 7:30pm Sunday, Nov. 22, in Seattle and on ESPN.

St. Edward's women advanced to the NCAA Division II Sweet 16 by beating Central Oklahoma in a shoot-out and then outlasting conference rival Incarnate Word, 1-0, last weekend in San Antonio. The Hilltoppers are in San Diego this Friday against West Texas A&M, who beat them 1-0 back in September in Canyon. The Final Four championship games will be Dec. 3 & 5 in Tampa, Fla.

Texas A&M is in the Sweet 16 as well, in Division I, after knocking off LSU in penalty kicks. They're at top-seeded Florida State on Friday; the Final Four will take place Dec. 4 & 6 in College Station.

The World Cup 2010 field is finally set: France, Portugal, Greece, Slovenia, Uruguay, and Algeria joined the party Wednesday, after New Zealand, Nigeria, and Cameroon qualified in dramatic fashion on Saturday. The final draw takes place Dec. 4; the tournament is June 11-July 11, 2010, in South Africa.

The Ottawa City Council ended months of bitter debate Monday by approving the $250 million Lansdowne Live sports and multiuse development project by a 15-9 vote; the complex is expected to host a Canadian Football League team and a new franchise in the Aztex's USL-1.
